Des Moines, Iowa – Drivers and outdoor workers across central Iowa should brace for blistering heat Saturday with feels-like temperatures soaring past 105°F. The National Weather Service warns that southern winds will push heat indices as high as 107°F in the Des Moines area, creating hazardous conditions by midday.

According to the NWS office in Des Moines, Saturday’s high will hit 96°F, and strong southwest winds between 10–15 mph will only intensify the heat. A Marginal Risk for severe weather remains in place Saturday night across northern Iowa, with damaging winds the primary threat. Scattered storms may develop late in the evening and continue into Sunday, particularly along I-35 and U.S. Route 30.

High humidity and sunshine will dominate much of the weekend, with little overnight relief—lows will remain in the mid-70s through Sunday morning. Residents are urged to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous activity during peak heat hours, and check on elderly neighbors or those without AC. If traveling, keep emergency kits in your car and remain weather-aware.

Spotters may be needed Friday night into Saturday across northern Iowa counties including Boone, Story, and Marshall. Local emergency managers advise keeping phones charged and weather alerts active.

Storm chances persist through Tuesday, with short breaks of sun between rounds of showers. Additional advisories are possible depending on storm development.
