Des Moines, IA – Iowans can expect a gradual warming trend this weekend after enduring bitterly cold conditions through Thursday and Friday.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, temperatures will remain well below zero overnight on both nights, with highs only reaching the single digits on Thursday and the teens on Friday. However, a shift in wind direction will bring relief by the weekend, pushing temperatures into the upper 30s and mid-40s by Sunday.

The cold snap is part of an ongoing arctic air mass that has gripped the region, with overnight lows plummeting as low as -10°F to -15°F in some areas. By Saturday, daytime highs will climb to the upper 20s and low 30s, signaling the start of a warming trend. Sunday will see the most significant improvement, with highs ranging from 38°F to 44°F.
