Des Moines, Iowa – Iowa residents will sweat through one more summerlike weekend as heat pushes near 93 degrees Sunday before storms return to central Iowa. Drivers on I-235 and I-80 should watch for changing conditions early next week as thunderstorm chances climb.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, Sunday will stay mostly sunny and hot, with storms developing after sunset. A chance of showers and thunderstorms lingers into Monday night, followed by stronger storm chances Tuesday and Wednesday.

Locally, Polk, Dallas, and Warren counties could see heavier downpours Tuesday night, with the possibility of gusty winds during evening commutes. While rainfall totals remain uncertain, forecasters warn any isolated storm could quickly dump enough rain to slow traffic on interstates and local highways.

The string of 90-degree days will break midweek, with highs falling into the 80s by Wednesday and Thursday. Residents are urged to limit outdoor work during peak afternoon heat on Sunday and keep devices charged in case of storm-related outages later this week.

By Thursday, rain chances taper, and temperatures will feel closer to seasonal averages, bringing relief after an extended stretch of late-summer heat. Weather officials note additional advisories may be issued as Tuesday’s system approaches.
