Iowa – Rain is already spreading across central Iowa this morning, and conditions are set to worsen quickly as the heaviest downpours move in during the late morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, rain chances climb rapidly through the morning, peaking between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. when coverage becomes widespread. Many locations, including Des Moines, Ames, Fort Dodge, and Marshalltown, face rain probabilities between 70 and 80 percent during that window.
Roads along I-35, I-80, and U.S. 69 could become slick with reduced visibility during heavier bursts. Drivers should allow extra travel time and watch for standing water, especially in low-lying or poorly drained areas.
By mid to late afternoon, rain coverage begins to taper off, shifting to more scattered showers. However, the break may be short-lived. Additional storm development is expected overnight, and a few stronger storms could produce small hail.
Temperatures remain mild despite the rain, generally holding in the 50s and 60s under cloudy skies.
Residents should keep umbrellas handy and monitor conditions closely, especially during the midday hours when rainfall is most intense. Charge devices and stay weather-aware if storms redevelop overnight.
The unsettled pattern continues into Sunday with lingering showers possible across central Iowa.
