Cedar Rapids, IA – A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 6 AM Sunday for much of east-central, northeast, and southeast Iowa as heavy snow and strong winds continue to impact the region, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) Quad Cities.

Forecasters expect an additional 6 to 10 inches of snow today and tonight, pushing storm totals well into double digits for many communities. Wind gusts reaching 35 mph this morning—and again this evening through tonight—will produce areas of blowing and drifting snow, significantly reducing visibility on open roadways.

Major population centers under the warning include Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, Vinton, Mount Pleasant, Independence, Marengo, Washington, Fairfield, and surrounding towns. Roads are becoming increasingly slick, with bridges and overpasses expected to be among the first surfaces to freeze and become hazardous.

Travel is likely to be very difficult, especially as snowfall rates increase later today. NWS strongly encourages delaying travel if possible. For those who must be on the road, officials recommend carrying a winter storm emergency kit—including blankets, tire chains, booster cables, water, a flashlight, and a first aid kit—in case of becoming stranded.

Conditions may worsen again this evening as winds strengthen and temperatures drop, prolonging impacts even after the heaviest snow ends. Roadway recovery across eastern Iowa may not improve until Sunday morning.
