Iowa’s humid air is already thickening, and scattered showers are beginning to dot roads across Des Moines as winds pick up and clouds deepen. Pavement may look manageable now, but conditions are starting to shift quickly.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, a few thunderstorms will move across central Iowa through the afternoon and evening, with additional storm chances continuing through much of the week. Flash flooding and river flooding are possible as repeated rounds of rain develop.

Highs reach near 73°F today, but gusty winds up to 33 mph will make driving along I-235 and I-80 more challenging at times. Brief downpours could reduce visibility quickly, especially during heavier showers this afternoon. Plan extra time if heading out.

Conditions settle slightly later, but the pattern stays active. By Monday, temperatures climb to 79°F with breezy conditions and a mix of sun and clouds. While much of the day stays dry, the atmosphere remains unstable.

Tuesday marks a more significant shift. Highs jump to 83°F with a 50% chance of showers and thunderstorms developing after 1 p.m. Some storms could produce heavier rainfall, increasing the risk of ponding on roads and localized flooding.

Storm chances continue Tuesday night into Wednesday, with rain likely at times and additional thunderstorms possible. Repeated rainfall may push rivers higher and overwhelm drainage systems in low-lying areas.

By Thursday, a brief break arrives with drier conditions and highs near 80°F, but more rain chances return by Friday.

Looking ahead, this active spring pattern aligns with a broader storm track across the Midwest, with warmer-than-normal temperatures expected late week. Keep umbrellas close and stay alert for changing conditions. Are you seeing standing water or strong winds where you are?
