Des Moines, IA – The National Weather Service in Des Moines has issued a Winter Storm Watch for much of northern and central Iowa, where strong winds and blowing snow may produce blizzard conditions late Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.
According to the NWS, northwest winds gusting over 50 mph will develop behind a cold front Tuesday evening, spreading across the region overnight. Areas including Sioux City, Fort Dodge, Mason City, Ames, and Waterloo are at the highest risk for near-whiteout conditions and dangerous travel due to drifting and blowing snow.
Meteorologists warn that travel could become nearly impossible in open areas, especially during the Wednesday morning commute. Even where new snowfall is limited, strong winds over existing snowpack may cause ground blizzards and sudden drops in visibility.
Residents are advised to avoid unnecessary travel, secure outdoor items, and plan ahead for hazardous conditions. Blowing snow and bitter wind chills will continue into Wednesday afternoon before gradually improving.
