Des Moines, IA – A winter storm system is expected to bring accumulating snow to much of Iowa beginning Saturday afternoon and continuing through early Sunday morning, according to the National Weather Service in Des Moines.

Forecasters say the heaviest snow will fall across northern and northwestern Iowa, where 3 to 6 inches of accumulation is likely, particularly near Estherville, Mason City, and Spencer. Central Iowa, including the Des Moines metro, may see 1 to 3 inches, with lighter amounts farther south.

Snow is expected to begin Saturday afternoon, intensify through the evening hours, and taper off by early Sunday. With temperatures in the upper 20s to low 30s, forecasters warn that roadways could become slick and hazardous, especially during Saturday night travel.

The probability of over 4 inches of snow is highest in the north-central part of the state, where chances exceed 60%. The NWS advises travelers to monitor local forecasts, allow extra time on the roads, and be prepared for reduced visibility and slippery conditions during the peak of the storm.

Drivers heading toward Minnesota or northern Iowa highways late Saturday should be particularly cautious as the system tracks eastward into Sunday morning.
