Des Moines, IA – The National Weather Service (NWS) in Des Moines has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for much of central and northern Iowa through midnight Thursday, warning of snow, sleet, and freezing rain expected to make travel hazardous across the region.
The advisory covers major cities including Des Moines, Ames, Mason City, Waterloo, Fort Dodge, and Ottumwa, with total snow accumulations between 1 and 4 inches and a light glaze of ice possible on top.
According to the NWS, “Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions could impact the Thursday evening commute.” Motorists are urged to use caution on Interstates 35, 80, and 380, as well as secondary and rural roads where untreated surfaces may quickly ice over.
The wintry mix will transition to light snow by late evening before tapering off overnight. Temperatures are expected to remain below freezing through early Friday, meaning any slush or melting will refreeze into the morning.
Drivers should slow down, allow extra travel time, and monitor the latest road conditions using the Iowa 511 app or 511ia.org.
