Mitchellville, IA – A fiery head-on collision on Interstate 80 Wednesday night left two people injured and shut down the highway for several hours, according to the Iowa State Patrol.
The crash occurred around 7:38 p.m. near the 149-mile marker east of Mitchellville, when a 2008 KIA Sorento traveling westbound crossed the median at a crossover and struck the cable barrier before entering the eastbound lanes. The KIA then collided head-on with a Kenworth semi-truck, causing both vehicles to veer off the roadway and become fully engulfed in flames.
According to the Iowa State Patrol, the driver of the KIA, 66-year-old Leslie Ann Ambrosino of West Des Moines, and the driver of the semi, 27-year-old Kilolie Siogue of Carbon Cliff, Illinois, were both injured. Ambrosino was taken to Methodist Hospital by Mitchellville Fire, while Siogue was transported to Lutheran Hospital by Bondurant Fire. Officials confirmed that both drivers were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.
The crash resulted in a full closure of I-80 eastbound near Mitchellville for several hours as crews from Bondurant, Colfax, Altoona, Baxter, Mitchellville, and Mingo fire departments—along with Jasper County Sheriff’s deputies—worked to extinguish the fire and clear debris.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol.
