Council Bluffs, Iowa – Residents across southwest Iowa should remain weather-aware Monday afternoon as a tornado watch remains in effect until 9 p.m. CDT, with strong storms capable of producing tornadoes, large hail, and damaging winds.
According to the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center, Tornado Watch 293 covers Fremont, Mills, Montgomery, Page, and Pottawattamie counties. Thunderstorm activity is expected to intensify throughout the afternoon, with rotating cells developing quickly in unstable air.
Communities along I-29 and U.S. Highway 34 could be at particular risk if storms build rapidly. Emergency managers in Pottawattamie County urged residents to have multiple ways to receive warnings and be prepared to shelter immediately if a tornado warning is issued.
Schools, outdoor sports practices, and evening events across the region may be disrupted or canceled. Those in mobile homes or traveling should have a safe shelter plan in place.
Storms may linger past sunset, but the primary tornado threat should diminish by late evening. Another round of alerts may follow if conditions evolve. Stay tuned to local weather updates and keep devices charged in case of power outages.
