Des Moines, Iowa – Morning commuters across Iowa could face gusty winds and scattered downpours Wednesday as a line of thunderstorms sweeps from northwest to southeast between 5 a.m. and 2 p.m. The main threat is strong wind gusts that could bring down tree limbs or disrupt travel, particularly along stretches of I-35 and Highway 20.
According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, storms will enter northwest Iowa around dawn and track toward central and eastern portions of the state by midday. While the storm system is expected to weaken throughout the morning, damaging winds remain possible, especially during the early phases.
Cities including Sioux City, Fort Dodge, Ames, and eventually Des Moines could see brief periods of heavy rain and winds topping 40–50 mph. Isolated power outages or delays are possible during the morning rush. Secondary threats include small hail and ponding on roads in low-lying areas.
Residents should secure loose outdoor items tonight and plan for reduced visibility and slick roads early Wednesday. Another round of thunderstorms is possible late Wednesday night into early Thursday.
