Council Bluffs, Iowa – Thunderstorms are expected to roar back into eastern Nebraska and southwest Iowa by Thursday afternoon, bringing a renewed threat of flooding and travel delays.
According to the National Weather Service in Omaha, rounds of storms will redevelop around 2 p.m. Thursday, with the highest impacts expected along the I-29 and U.S. 75 corridors, including Council Bluffs, Carter Lake, and South Omaha. Localized heavy rainfall and damaging wind gusts could lead to flash flooding, especially in low-lying and poor drainage areas.
Officials urge drivers to stay off flooded roads and to prepare for potential delays on major routes. Rainfall amounts between a half and one inch are possible, with isolated higher totals where storms linger. Thursday night skies will begin to clear, but saturated ground and swollen rivers like the Elkhorn and Missouri could remain problematic.
Another wave of rain returns Saturday night into early Monday. While severe weather chances remain under 10%, heavy rain could cause additional flooding and push rivers near flood stage again in southeast Nebraska and western Iowa.
