Quad Cities, Iowa/Illinois – Record-breaking heat could spark severe thunderstorms Thursday afternoon across eastern Iowa and western Illinois, including the Quad Cities region. Temperatures are expected to soar into the lower to mid-90s, setting the stage for storm development as a cold front moves through.

According to the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities, confidence remains low on the exact timing and location of storms, but any that form could turn severe. The best chance for strong activity is Thursday evening, particularly east of the Mississippi River. A cap of warm air aloft may suppress storm formation, but if it breaks, damaging winds and isolated large hail are possible.

Cities including Davenport, Moline, Galesburg, and Muscatine should prepare for rapidly changing conditions. Gusty southwest winds could drive heat indices higher, making outdoor activities hazardous. Residents are urged to stay weather-aware and avoid non-essential travel during potential storms.

The heat and humidity are forecast to peak Thursday before dropping into the 70s by Friday. Additional updates and advisories may follow as confidence increases. Stay tuned to local alerts through Thursday night.
