Sioux Falls, South Dakota – Residents across South Dakota should brace for a potentially stormy night as severe thunderstorms may sweep through the region from 9 p.m. Thursday to 4 a.m. Friday, bringing threats of damaging winds, large hail, and isolated tornadoes.
According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, a “slight risk” for severe weather covers eastern South Dakota and stretches into neighboring parts of Minnesota, Iowa, and Nebraska. Storms that develop may bring wind gusts up to 70 mph, hail as large as two inches in diameter, and the potential for brief tornado spin-ups during the overnight hours.
Sioux Falls, Brookings, and Yankton are among the higher-risk areas. Travel could become hazardous, especially on I-29 and I-90, as strong winds and reduced visibility may impact overnight drivers. Residents are urged to monitor weather alerts and ensure they have a way to receive warnings while sleeping.
The window of greatest concern is late Thursday night through early Friday morning. Further watches or warnings could be issued as timing becomes clearer.
