South Dakota – Quiet skies across Sioux Falls today could quickly give way to a more dangerous setup, with strong to severe storms expected to develop by Monday afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, only isolated storms are possible late tonight into Sunday, with a marginal risk (Level 1 of 5). Coverage remains limited, with overall storm chances between 20 and 30 percent.

The bigger concern arrives Monday. A Level 2 risk (out of 5) is in place for portions of southeast South Dakota, northwest Iowa, and southern Minnesota, including Sioux Falls. Storms are expected to develop between 3 p.m. and 10 p.m., bringing the potential for large hail and damaging wind gusts.

Communities along I-29 and I-90, including Sioux Falls, Brookings, and Yankton, could see rapidly changing conditions during the late afternoon and evening. Visibility may drop during heavy rain, and strong winds could impact travel and outdoor plans.

While tornado risk remains low, it is not zero. Residents should be prepared to act quickly if warnings are issued.

Storms are expected to weaken and move east by late evening, but additional updates are likely as timing and intensity become clearer.

This is a classic spring setup, with calm conditions now giving way to a more active and potentially hazardous Monday.
