Des Moines, IA – A major winter storm will bring significant snowfall to Iowa late Tuesday into Wednesday, impacting travel across much of the state. Snow is expected to begin around midnight in western Iowa before spreading eastward overnight.

According to the National Weather Service, the heaviest snowfall will be in southern and central Iowa, where accumulations of 5 to 8 inches are expected. Other areas, including Webster, Franklin, Wright, and Calhoun counties, may see 2 to 4 inches. Snowfall rates will range from a quarter to three-quarters of an inch per hour, creating hazardous road conditions for commuters.

Despite reduced visibility from falling snow, winds are not expected to cause significant blowing snow. However, roads will become slick, especially during the Wednesday morning and evening commutes. The snowfall is expected to taper off from west to east by late Wednesday evening.

Drivers are urged to slow down and use caution while traveling. For the latest road conditions, check the Iowa 511 app or visit www.511ia.org.
