Des Moines, Iowa – Strong storms are set to sweep across Iowa today, bringing the highest risk for damaging winds in the northern part of the state from late morning through early evening. Wind gusts strong enough to down trees and power lines are the primary hazard, with hail and heavy rain also possible in spots.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, the most active period will be between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m., as storms move east at 20 to 25 mph. The greatest threat zone includes areas along and north of U.S. Highway 20, with the highest severe risk stretching from Mason City toward Dubuque. Additional showers and storms could redevelop overnight along the Iowa-Minnesota border and linger into Saturday morning.

Residents should secure outdoor items, avoid unnecessary travel during severe weather, and have multiple ways to receive warnings. Those in mobile homes or outdoor venues should be prepared to move to sturdy shelter quickly.

Warnings remain in place through tonight, with more alerts possible if storms track farther south than currently expected.
