Des Moines, Iowa – Damaging winds and large hail are hitting central and northern Iowa early Friday as a fast-moving line of severe thunderstorms sweeps southeast across the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, severe thunderstorm warnings remain in effect until 7 a.m. for counties including Marshall, Story, Tama, Worth, Jasper, and Hancock. Radar indicates wind gusts reaching 60 mph and hail up to one inch in diameter, with storms moving between 30 and 40 mph.
Communities impacted include Mason City, Forest City, Ames, Newton, and Grinnell. Roads like Interstate 35 (mile markers 114 to 208) and Interstate 80 (mile markers 153 to 204) could see downed limbs, poor visibility, and hazardous driving conditions through sunrise. Residents in Redfield, Panora, and Clear Lake should also brace for potential damage to siding, roofs, and trees.
If you’re in the warning area, move to an interior room away from windows and avoid travel unless absolutely necessary. Emergency officials advise keeping devices charged and securing loose outdoor items.
