Des Moines, IA – A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for central and eastern Iowa, Nebraska, and portions of surrounding states until 10 p.m. CDT Friday, impacting nearly 3 million people.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Des Moines, the storm system poses a threat of tornadoes, damaging winds up to 90 mph, and large hail—potentially reaching ping-pong ball size.

Major cities under the watch include Des Moines, Ames, Waterloo, Fort Dodge, Carroll, Ottumwa, Omaha, and Lincoln. Residents should remain alert as conditions may rapidly worsen.

Key threats include:

  • Tornadoes: A couple of tornadoes are possible.
  • Hail: Scattered hail up to ping-pong ball size.
