Des Moines, Iowa – A widespread severe thunderstorm threat is unfolding across Iowa this afternoon, with 58 counties under a Severe Thunderstorm Watch until 9 p.m. CDT Thursday. Residents from Des Moines to Waterloo should expect damaging winds, large hail, and heavy rain through the evening hours.

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, the watch includes major population centers such as Polk, Linn, Black Hawk, and Story counties. Wind gusts up to 70 mph, quarter-size hail, and isolated tornadoes are possible. The line of storms is expected to move rapidly northeast, increasing the risk of power outages and hazardous travel during the evening commute.

Eastern and central counties—including Cedar Rapids, Ames, and Ottumwa—face the highest risk for severe impacts. Interstate 35, I-80, and US Highway 20 could see periods of low visibility and ponding on road surfaces. Local emergency agencies advise residents to secure outdoor items and avoid unnecessary travel until storms pass.

The timing of this system coincides with peak traffic hours and evening activities, increasing vulnerability. This is the first large-scale thunderstorm watch to impact the state since early June.

Stay weather-aware this evening; additional warnings and alerts may follow as storms intensify.
