Des Moines, IA – Frost-covered roads are causing slick and hazardous driving conditions across central and northern Iowa this morning. The National Weather Service (NWS) advises drivers to slow down and use caution during their morning commutes.
According to the NWS, frost developed overnight as warm air moved over cold road surfaces, particularly on highways such as I-35 and rural routes. Conditions are expected to improve later today as temperatures rise to a high near 39°F under sunny skies. However, drivers should remain cautious on untreated or shaded roadways.
Tonight, partly cloudy skies will bring a low near 26°F with light southwest winds. Friday offers a brief reprieve, with mostly sunny skies and a high near 44°F. A cold front will move in Friday night, bringing wind chills as low as -4°F and gusts up to 32 mph.
Saturday will be blustery, with a high of 19°F and northwest winds making it feel even colder. By Sunday, temperatures will plummet further, with highs near 7°F and lows below zero. Residents should prepare for extreme cold through Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, as highs remain near 6°F with wind chills well below freezing.
