Montrose, IA – Thursday morning brought significant rainfall to parts of Iowa and Illinois, with Montrose recording the highest rainfall total at 3.46 inches. The National Weather Service (NWS) in the Quad Cities reported a stubborn weather pattern causing slow-moving, heavy rain showers and storms over the past several days.
According to the NWS, this morning’s storms, which extended from Keokuk, IA into far western Illinois, resulted in heavy rainfall within a two-hour period, leading to isolated flash flooding. In addition to Montrose, other notable rainfall totals included Elvaston, IL with 3.02 inches, Donnellson, IA at 2.70 inches, Sandusky, IA with 2.50 inches, and Keokuk, IA at 1.90 inches. Fort Madison, IA reported 0.46 inches of rain.
The heavy rain caused creeks to overflow their banks and roads to become inundated, particularly in Montrose, IA and parts of Hancock County, IL. Additional rainfall totals from yesterday and last night included Burlington, IA with 1.58 inches, Augusta, IL at 1.49 inches, and Hillsboro, IA with 0.99 inches.
Looking ahead, the NWS forecasts that the forcing for these scattered storms is expected to shift just south of the area by Friday. Residents are advised to stay updated on weather alerts and take necessary precautions to stay safe from potential flooding and hazardous conditions.
