Des Moines, IA – Post-Christmas travel across Iowa could be slowed today and into Friday morning as dense fog and drizzle create reduced visibility on roads statewide.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, travelers heading out Christmas Day through at least Friday morning should be prepared for areas of fog, with some locations seeing visibility drop below one mile at times. Patchy drizzle may also accompany the fog, increasing the risk of slick road conditions during the morning commute.

Friday is expected to start foggy once again, with possibly dense fog during the morning hours before gradual improvement later in the day. While travel conditions remain a nuisance-level concern through Friday, forecasters say Saturday currently looks to offer the most favorable travel conditions statewide, with partial sunshine and calmer weather.

Conditions are expected to change again Sunday as much colder air moves in from the northwest, bringing gusty winds and scattered snow showers. While it is still too early to pinpoint exact snowfall totals, the NWS says snow accumulation is expected to remain under one inch. Even light snowfall, however, combined with wind and falling temperatures, could create hazardous road conditions.

The National Weather Service reminds drivers that it does not take significant snowfall to cause travel issues, especially when visibility is reduced or roads become icy.

Motorists are encouraged to slow down in fog, use low-beam headlights, and monitor updated forecasts as conditions evolve through the weekend.
