Omaha, NE – Drivers in western Iowa and northeast Nebraska should brace for dangerous travel conditions beginning Friday at noon, as a winter storm brings heavy snow, light icing, and gusty winds through midnight Saturday.

According to the National Weather Service in Omaha/Valley, the storm will deliver 4 to 8 inches of snow across Monona, Harrison, and Shelby counties in Iowa, as well as Thurston County in Nebraska. A light glaze of ice is also expected, creating slick road surfaces even before heavier snow settles in. Wind gusts up to 35 mph will lead to blowing snow and reduced visibility.

Forecasters warn the storm will peak during the Friday evening commute, when mixed precipitation transitions into heavier snow. Rapid accumulation and areas of drifting will make travel “very difficult” as road crews work to keep up.

Major routes at risk include I-29, US-75, US-30, and IA-37, where a combination of snow and ice may create hazardous stretches, especially in open rural areas prone to blowing snow. Drivers should be prepared for sudden changes in visibility and traction as conditions worsen into Friday night.

The mixture of ice and snow could also impact secondary roads around communities including Onawa, Harlan, Missouri Valley, Logan, Woodbine, Macy, Pender, and Winnebago.

Officials advise delaying travel if possible. Anyone who must be on the road should carry emergency supplies, including food, water, and a flashlight. Drivers can check updated road conditions by calling 511 in both Iowa and Nebraska.

Conditions are expected to slowly improve late Saturday night as winds ease and precipitation ends.
