Omaha, NE – Snow will begin piling up across eastern Nebraska and southwest Iowa by midday Thursday, with 4 to 6 inches expected to blanket roads before the Friday morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Omaha/Valley, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect from noon Thursday until 6 a.m. CST Friday for Douglas, Sarpy, Dodge, Washington, Saunders, Butler and Colfax counties in Nebraska, along with Harrison and Pottawattamie counties in Iowa. Forecasters expect widespread snowfall totals between 4 and 6 inches, with steady accumulation through the evening.
The heaviest snow is likely during the late afternoon and evening hours, directly impacting the Thursday commute across Omaha, Bellevue, Papillion and La Vista. In Iowa, Council Bluffs, Missouri Valley and Logan could see roads quickly turn snow-covered as snowfall rates increase.
Major corridors including Interstate 80, Highway 75 and Highway 30 may become slick, especially on bridges and overpasses where temperatures drop faster. Plows will work primary routes, but residential streets may remain snow-packed overnight.
Drivers should consider adjusting travel plans and allow extra time if heading out Thursday evening. Keep emergency supplies in your vehicle and check 511 for updated road conditions in Nebraska and Iowa.
Snow should taper before sunrise Friday, but icy patches could linger into the early commute as temperatures remain below freezing. Additional advisories may be issued if snowfall rates increase beyond current projections.
