Omaha, NE – Light but impactful snow is expected across portions of northeast Nebraska and western Iowa today as a Winter Weather Advisory goes into effect. The National Weather Service says the system may cause slippery travel conditions from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. CST.
According to the National Weather Service Omaha/Valley office, areas including Monona, Harrison, and Shelby counties in Iowa, along with Knox, Cedar, Thurston, and Wayne counties in Nebraska, are forecast to receive 1 to 3 inches of snow. Wind gusts may reach 35 mph, which could briefly reduce visibility and blow snow across roadways.
Forecasters say the combination of light accumulation and gusty winds will be enough to create slick roads, especially on bridges, untreated surfaces, and rural corridors exposed to crosswinds. Drivers in communities such as Onawa, Missouri Valley, Harlan, Wayne, Hartington, Bloomfield, Laurel, and Winnebago should expect slower travel throughout the day.
The National Weather Service advises motorists to slow down, use caution, and allow extra stopping distance. Pedestrians should also watch for icy spots on sidewalks, driveways, and stairs.
Road conditions are available by calling 511 in both Iowa and Nebraska.
