Omaha, NE – Strong storms with gusty winds and heavy rainfall could rattle eastern Nebraska and southwest Iowa Sunday afternoon, with another round expected through the evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Omaha, scattered thunderstorms are expected through Sunday night, with peak activity between 2 p.m. and 10 p.m. Damaging winds up to 65 mph and hail up to the size of quarters are possible, especially along the I-29 corridor from Fremont to Council Bluffs. While the morning storms are likely to be weaker, later activity may turn severe.
In Omaha and surrounding areas, rain totals could reach over an inch in localized downpours. Sunday highs near 91°F combined with high humidity will make for uncomfortable conditions. Carter Lake and Council Bluffs are under particular watch for strong winds and low visibility in heavy rain bursts.
Spotters may be needed this afternoon, and residents are urged to avoid outdoor activities during peak storm hours. Keep phones charged, secure outdoor furniture, and be prepared for sudden power outages.
Looking ahead, heat index values may climb past 100°F again by Thursday and Friday. More advisories may be issued in the coming days.
