Sioux Falls, SD – A heat advisory remains in effect from noon today until 8 p.m. CDT this evening for much of South Dakota, parts of Iowa, and Nebraska as scorching temperatures and high humidity combine to create a dangerous heat index, likely reaching 105°F. Residents are urged to take precautions, especially during outdoor activities.
According to the National Weather Service, the excessive heat and humidity will significantly elevate the risk of heat-related illnesses. Areas impacted include Sioux City, Yankton, Mitchell, and numerous other cities in southeast South Dakota, northwest Iowa, and northeast Nebraska. The advisory also covers communities such as Vermillion, Le Mars, and South Sioux City.
The heat index will climb rapidly as temperatures soar this afternoon, and officials are advising everyone to drink plenty of water, seek air-conditioned shelter, and avoid the sun as much as possible. In addition, young children and pets should never be left in parked vehicles, as temperatures inside cars can rise to life-threatening levels within minutes.
With dangerous conditions expected to persist through the evening, locals are also reminded to check on neighbors, particularly the elderly, and consider rescheduling outdoor work during peak heat.
Stay informed, as this advisory could be extended or additional warnings issued as the heat continues.
