Omaha, Nebraska – Triple-digit heat is set to grip eastern Nebraska and western Iowa this weekend, with heat index values soaring as high as 110 degrees by Friday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Omaha, an Extreme Heat Watch will go into effect at 10 a.m. Friday and last through 9 p.m. Sunday. The alert includes Omaha, Lincoln, Council Bluffs, and dozens of surrounding communities. The prolonged heat and humidity will create conditions ripe for heat-related illnesses, especially for vulnerable populations and outdoor workers.

Cities like Fremont, Norfolk, and Red Oak are also expected to see sweltering temperatures, with little overnight relief. Local emergency officials are urging residents to avoid strenuous activity during peak heat hours, check on elderly neighbors, and never leave children or pets inside vehicles.

Cooling centers may open in cities like Beatrice and Blair if conditions worsen. Residents should monitor local updates and be prepared for possible upgrades to a Heat Warning.

The heat dome affecting the region is similar to July 2022, when Omaha saw back-to-back 100° days. This weekend’s event could challenge those records.

More advisories are possible as the weekend nears. The heat watch remains in effect through Sunday evening.
