Omaha, NE – A powerful Arctic blast will grip eastern Nebraska and western Iowa this week, bringing subzero temperatures and dangerously cold wind chills. Forecasters warn wind chills could drop as low as -30°F, creating life-threatening conditions for those outdoors.

According to the National Weather Service, a Cold Weather Advisory is in effect Monday night through Tuesday, followed by an Extreme Cold Watch from Tuesday afternoon through Thursday morning. Light snow is expected Monday into Tuesday, with wind gusts up to 16 mph. Temperatures will remain below freezing all week, with highs struggling to reach single digits.

Residents should prepare for extreme cold by dressing in layers, limiting time outdoors, and protecting pets. Frostbite can occur within 10 minutes at these temperatures. If traveling, carry a winter emergency kit, as road conditions may become hazardous.

By Wednesday night, temperatures could plummet to -17°F, making it one of the coldest stretches of winter. Thursday will remain frigid, with highs around 6°F. The weekend may bring slight relief, but subzero wind chills will persist.
