Des Moines, Iowa – Strong winds combined with falling and existing snow are expected to create dangerous travel conditions across parts of Iowa this afternoon and evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, very strong winds will surge across the state today while light snow develops, mainly across northern and northeastern Iowa. Although snowfall amounts are expected to be relatively light, the combination of powerful winds, falling snow, and snow already on the ground may lead to near-blizzard conditions in some areas.

Additional snow accumulations are forecast to reach up to around 1 inch in northern Iowa. Forecasters emphasize that visibility reductions, rather than snowfall totals, will be the primary concern. Blowing snow may rapidly reduce visibility to near zero at times, particularly in open and rural areas.

Travel is expected to be especially hazardous on major roadways including Interstate 35, Interstate 80, U.S. 30, and U.S. 20, as well as secondary highways and county roads. Strong crosswinds could make driving difficult for high-profile vehicles, while drifting snow may obscure lane markings and shoulders.

The National Weather Service warns that conditions may deteriorate quickly this afternoon and remain dangerous into the evening hours. Drivers are urged to delay non-essential travel, slow down, and be prepared for sudden visibility loss.

Officials advise keeping emergency supplies in vehicles, including blankets, food, and a charged phone, in case motorists become stranded. Road conditions may vary significantly over short distances.

Commuters, freight drivers, and evening travelers across northern and northeastern Iowa should be prepared for dangerous and unpredictable roadway conditions through tonight.
