Fort Madison, IA – Drivers across southeast Iowa and northeast Missouri are waking up to dangerous travel conditions this morning as dense fog blankets the region.
According to the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities, a Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect until 9 a.m. Sunday for Lee and Van Buren counties in Iowa, as well as Clark and Scotland counties in Missouri. Visibility in some areas has dropped to a quarter-mile or less.
Officials warn that the fog could make morning travel especially hazardous. Commuters should plan for slower travel times and allow for extra distance between vehicles. The advisory includes cities such as Fort Madison, Keosauqua, Kahoka, and Memphis, where visibility is expected to remain significantly reduced through the morning commute.
The NWS recommends motorists keep headlights on, reduce speed, and avoid sudden braking when encountering fog. Drivers are also urged to remain alert for vehicles or pedestrians that may be difficult to see.
Conditions are expected to gradually improve after sunrise as the fog lifts. However, residents heading out early should use caution until visibility returns to normal.
