Albert Lea, Minnesota – Freezing rain could create hazardous travel and potential ice accumulation along the Iowa–Minnesota state line Wednesday into Thursday.

According to the National Weather Service, a developing storm system is expected to bring precipitation to southern Minnesota and northern Iowa by Wednesday afternoon. As surface temperatures hover near or below 32 degrees, rain may freeze on contact, leading to ice buildup on roads, bridges and power lines.

Forecasters indicate that ice accumulations of one-tenth of an inch or more are possible along and near Interstate 35, including Albert Lea, Minnesota, and Northwood and Mason City, Iowa. Exact totals will depend on temperature trends and the storm’s track.

Even light ice accumulation can make untreated roads slick and hazardous, particularly during the evening and early morning hours. Elevated surfaces such as overpasses and rural highways may freeze first.

Periods of sleet or plain rain may mix in at times, but freezing rain remains the primary concern along the state line. The heaviest precipitation is currently expected Wednesday evening into early Thursday.

Travel along Interstate 35, U.S. Highway 65 and surrounding county roads could become difficult if ice accumulates. Ice buildup on trees and power lines may also increase the risk of isolated power outages if totals trend higher.

Meteorologists advise residents to monitor forecast updates as small temperature shifts could significantly impact ice amounts.

Commuters, students and overnight shift workers along the Iowa–Minnesota state line should allow extra travel time if conditions deteriorate midweek.
