Quad Cities, IA/IL – The National Weather Service has issued a severe weather warning for the Quad Cities area, forecasting severe thunderstorms and extreme heat on Thursday.

According to the NWS, isolated severe storms are expected to develop between 1 a.m. and 8 a.m. CDT, primarily north of Iowa City to Freeport, Illinois. Storm threats include gusty winds, hail, and lightning, with a low risk rating of 1 out of 5. Later in the day, from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m., there is a higher likelihood of severe thunderstorms, particularly south of U.S. Highway 30, with potential for large hail, damaging winds, and isolated tornadoes.

In addition to storm risks, the Quad Cities region will experience hot and humid conditions with temperatures soaring into the upper 80s to lower 90s. Increased moisture will push heat indices near 100 degrees. The NWS advises residents to wear light-colored clothing, drink plenty of fluids, limit outdoor activities, and use sunscreen to prevent heat-related illnesses.

Residents are encouraged to stay weather aware and have multiple ways to receive warning information. The primary severe weather threats include large hail, damaging winds, and isolated tornadoes. Confidence is high that the most intense storms will occur between 2 p.m. and 10 p.m., with a cold front moving through the area.

The NWS emphasizes the importance of heat safety and storm preparedness, urging everyone to monitor local weather updates and take necessary precautions to ensure safety during this period of severe weather conditions.
