Iowa–Illinois — Snowflakes thicken quickly across the Quad Cities this morning, blurring headlights and softening the edges of bridges and river crossings. Roads look wet at first glance, but patches of snow-covered pavement hide slick conditions that can catch drivers off guard.
According to the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities, a narrow but persistent band of snow continues mainly north of U.S. Highway 30. Additional accumulation of one to three inches remains possible, especially from Davenport and Bettendorf into Rock Island, Moline, and areas north and east of the metro. Visibility may drop to around a half mile at times as heavier bursts pass through.
Travel impacts are most noticeable on secondary roads, ramps, and bridges, including stretches near I-74 and I-280. Snow-covered lanes and brief whiteouts can develop quickly. Drivers should slow down, leave extra space, and expect changing conditions through the morning.
Snow tapers later today as clouds gradually thin. Highs reach near 30 degrees, limiting melting. Any slush that forms may refreeze after sunset as temperatures fall into the teens, creating new icy spots for the evening commute.
Wednesday brings calmer winter weather. Sunshine returns, and highs hover near the upper 20s. Roads improve, though shaded areas may stay slick early. Wednesday night stays cold, setting up a noticeable shift by Thursday.
Thursday feels milder under partly sunny skies. Highs climb near 40 degrees, helping melt lingering snow. Wet pavement becomes widespread during the afternoon. Once temperatures dip Thursday night, refreezing may again create slick travel conditions.
Friday turns mostly sunny and warmer, with highs in the mid-40s. That warmth continues into the weekend, easing winter’s grip across eastern Iowa and western Illinois.
Looking ahead, NOAA’s 6–10 day outlook shows above-normal temperatures expanding across the Midwest late next week. A gradual thaw appears likely, though winter hazards remain in the short term.
Drive carefully through snow bands today and watch for refreezing tonight. How much snow has piled up where you are?
