Iowa–Illinois – Headlights vanish into a gray blur this morning as freezing fog settles over the Quad Cities, coating bridges and overpasses with a thin glaze. The air feels damp and raw, and travel conditions can change in seconds.

The National Weather Service has issued a Dense Fog Advisory through late morning. Visibility drops to a quarter mile or less in spots across Davenport, Moline, Rock Island, and Bettendorf. With temperatures near 31 degrees, freezing fog may create slick patches on untreated roads. Drivers along I-80, I-74, and Highway 61 should slow down and increase following distance.

Fog gradually lifts by late morning, allowing partial clearing. Temperatures climb toward 50 this afternoon, well above normal for January 2026. As surfaces warm, icy spots ease, but melting moisture leaves pavement wet.

Attention quickly shifts to the next Weather system. Clouds thicken tonight, and rain develops Thursday afternoon. According to the National Weather Service, rain becomes widespread Thursday evening, with steady showers lasting into early Friday. Gusty south winds may reduce visibility and make driving uncomfortable, especially during evening commutes.

Friday turns cooler and mostly cloudy, with highs in the mid-40s. While rainfall eases, damp roads remain an issue. Ice jams are also being monitored on the Rock River as warmer temperatures loosen river ice. Localized flooding remains possible near tributaries.

By Friday night into Saturday, colder air returns. Rain may mix with snow, especially after sunset. Light accumulations are possible Saturday, leading to slushy roads and minor travel impacts. Saturday night lows fall near 20, raising concern for flash freezing on wet pavement.

Sunday looks quieter but colder, with sunshine returning and highs near 29. Winter regains control heading into early next week.
