DAVENPORT, Iowa – A gray start to the weekend will give way to the region’s first real taste of winter as a cold front sweeps across eastern Iowa and western Illinois. Wet roads and a brief burst of snow could slow travel tonight, particularly along I-80 and Highway 30 where visibility may drop quickly in heavier bands.
According to the National Weather Service Quad Cities office, rain will develop this afternoon, then mix with and change to snow by early evening as colder air settles in. Forecasters expect the heaviest bursts of snow between 3 and 8 p.m., with localized bands capable of producing 1 to 2 inches—mainly north of Highway 30. While accumulation should remain light, even a thin coating could make untreated surfaces slick as temperatures fall into the 20s by Sunday morning.
Gusty northwest winds up to 30 mph will follow the front, ushering in wind chills in the teens and low 20s by Sunday. Skies will clear quickly, though, leaving behind crisp sunshine and a calm but cold finish to the weekend.
Residents are urged to check travel conditions before heading out and allow extra stopping distance, especially on bridges and overpasses. Early-week conditions turn milder again with highs rebounding into the 50s for Veterans Day—ideal for outdoor observances or late fall yardwork before colder air returns later next week.
