Davenport, Iowa – Strong thunderstorms are sweeping across eastern Iowa and parts of northwest Illinois this morning, bringing gusty winds, heavy downpours, and a low-end tornado threat. The most intense activity is expected north of I-80, including the Cedar Rapids, Waterloo, and Quad Cities areas.
According to the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities, storms will continue developing through at least 6:30 a.m., with additional rounds possible throughout the day and into the evening. Wind gusts could reach 40 mph, and torrential rain may lead to ponding on roads and flash flooding in low-lying areas. A few storms may briefly rotate, producing a funnel cloud or a weak tornado.
The greatest risk stretches along and north of I-80, impacting travel on key corridors like US-151, I-380, and IL Route 84. Cities such as Iowa City, Clinton, and Galesburg could also experience multiple waves of storms with frequent lightning and rapidly changing conditions.
Officials urge residents to stay weather-aware, especially during commutes. Move indoors at the first sound of thunder, and never drive across flooded roads.
More storms are expected later today and into tonight. Additional warnings or advisories may be issued as the system progresses.
