DAVENPORT, Iowa – The final stretch of fall warmth will hold through Friday before a sharp cooldown sweeps into the Quad Cities area this weekend, bringing the season’s first chance for light snow north of Highway 30.

According to the National Weather Service Quad Cities, Thursday and Friday will feature above-normal temperatures in the mid to upper 60s. A weak disturbance will bring scattered showers Thursday night, followed by another system late Saturday into Saturday night. That second round could bring a brief mix or light snow, especially across northern Iowa and northwest Illinois. Any accumulation should stay minor, with only a dusting expected at most.

By Sunday, a much colder air mass will settle in, dropping highs into the 30s and lows near freezing. Gusty northwest winds will add to the chill, signaling a firm end to the region’s recent mild spell.

While no significant travel issues are expected, forecasters urge drivers to stay alert for slick spots late Saturday night, particularly north of Cedar Rapids and along Highway 30. Residents are encouraged to take advantage of Thursday and Friday’s warmth to complete outdoor work and winterize gardens or pipes ahead of the colder days ahead.
