Davenport, Iowa – Triple-digit heat index values could scorch eastern Iowa and northwest Illinois this weekend, prompting an Extreme Heat Watch from Saturday afternoon through Sunday evening.

According to the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities, heat index values may exceed 105°F across cities like Cedar Rapids, Davenport, Dubuque, Iowa City, and Rock Island. The prolonged heat, paired with muggy overnight lows in the mid-to-upper 70s, may stretch into early next week—raising the risk of heat-related illness.

Communities in Buchanan, Clinton, Linn, Johnson, and Scott counties are among those under the watch, which covers both rural and urban regions where heat can compound due to pavement and limited shade. Health officials urge residents to stay indoors during peak afternoon hours, hydrate frequently, and check on vulnerable individuals, including the elderly and those without air conditioning.

Local cooling centers may open across Muscatine, Mount Pleasant, and Burlington. Residents should monitor local alerts and be prepared to alter outdoor plans.

The National Weather Service may issue a Heat Advisory or Warning as conditions evolve. Updates are expected by Friday.
