DAVENPORT, Iowa / MOLINE, Illinois – Thick fog blanketed the Mississippi River Valley early Friday, dimming streetlights and reducing visibility to a quarter mile in parts of the Quad Cities. Motorists across I-74 and I-80 were urged to slow down as wet pavement and low clouds made for a slick, hazy start to the morning. But behind the gloom lies a quick turnaround — a bright, mild weekend before a wetter pattern develops just ahead of Thanksgiving travel.

According to the National Weather Service Quad Cities office, the dense fog will lift by midmorning as weak northerly winds dry the lower atmosphere. Skies gradually clear through Saturday, bringing sunshine and afternoon highs in the mid-50s. By Sunday, calm winds and sunshine dominate, pushing temperatures close to 58°F — ideal for outdoor plans, tailgates, or early Christmas decorating.

The next change comes Monday, when a strong low-pressure system pulls in moisture from the south. Rain chances climb to 80% Monday night, with between 0.25–0.5 inches possible before tapering Tuesday morning. Travelers along I-80 and U.S. 61 should plan for slower commutes and occasional ponding on rural roads.

National weather models are beginning to show a colder, more active pattern taking shape next week. Between November 25 and December 3, parts of the central and eastern U.S. could see their first measurable snowfall of the season — a developing trend that could complicate Thanksgiving travel for millions.
