DAVENPORT, IA – The Mississippi River Valley wakes under clear skies and crisp air this Monday morning, but change is already building west of the Quad Cities. A warm-up today will be short-lived—winds are expected to howl by afternoon before a steep temperature drop and frost risk settle in by midweek.

According to the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities, south winds will strengthen rapidly through midday, gusting 30 to 35 mph at times along I-80 and across open farmland. Highs will reach near 71 °F before cooler air slides in late tonight. A few light showers may develop between 8 and 10 p.m., mainly north of Davenport and Bettendorf, but rain amounts should stay minimal.

By Tuesday, skies turn mostly sunny but breezy, with west winds up to 30 mph keeping highs closer to 56 °F. The real chill arrives Tuesday night into Wednesday as calmer air and clear skies allow lows to dip near 40 °F. Forecasters expect another drop by Wednesday night, when rural valleys from Eldridge to Geneseo could briefly touch the mid-30s—the first widespread frost threat of the season.

Thursday and Friday bring back sunshine with highs near 61 °F but crisp mornings likely to flirt with freezing in sheltered areas. It’s a strong reminder that fall’s transition is speeding up. Residents should protect tender plants, drain outdoor hoses, and prep heating systems before the First Fall Freeze locks in across the region late this week.
