Davenport, Iowa – Drivers across eastern Iowa and northwest Illinois could encounter visibility dropping below one-half mile Monday evening as strong winds push blowing snow across open roads through midnight.

According to the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until midnight CDT Monday for a wide swath of eastern Iowa, northwest Illinois, and parts of northeast Missouri. Winds gusting up to 35 mph are blowing snow across highways and rural roads, especially in open farmland where drifting snow can quickly cover lanes.

Communities including Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, Davenport, Dubuque, Muscatine, Clinton, and Burlington in Iowa, along with Rock Island, Moline, Freeport, and Sterling in Illinois, may experience sudden visibility drops as scattered snow showers pass through the region.

Major travel corridors such as Interstate 80, Interstate 74, and U.S. Highway 61 are particularly vulnerable to blowing snow, where drivers could move from clear conditions into whiteout-like bursts within seconds.

Officials urge drivers to slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and avoid sudden braking, especially on bridges and untreated roads where slick spots may develop.

Travelers can check 511ia.org in Iowa, GettingAroundIllinois.com in Illinois, or Missouri’s 511 system for updated road conditions. Winds should gradually ease after midnight Monday, allowing visibility to improve overnight, though isolated slick spots may remain into early Tuesday.
