Davenport, IA – Drivers across eastern Iowa and northwest Illinois could encounter rapidly deteriorating road conditions tonight as rounds of heavy rain move through, dropping up to 2 inches in some areas and triggering localized flooding.
Rain will become widespread this evening, with the heaviest bursts expected between 8 p.m. and 2 a.m. Areas along and between Highway 30 and Highway 34 face the highest risk for significant rainfall totals, where water could quickly collect on roadways and in low-lying areas.
According to the National Weather Service Quad Cities office, periods of showers and a few thunderstorms will continue through the night, with rainfall rates intense enough at times to overwhelm drainage systems. Totals of 1 to 2 inches are possible, especially from near Cedar Rapids through Iowa City, the Quad Cities, and into northwest Illinois.
Urban areas including Davenport, Moline, Rock Island, and Bettendorf are particularly vulnerable to ponding water on streets, especially in poor drainage zones. Reduced visibility during heavier downpours could also create hazardous driving conditions for the late evening commute.
While widespread river flooding is not expected, small creeks and streams may rise quickly in response to heavier rainfall bursts. Areas with saturated ground or limited drainage capacity could see brief flooding issues develop with little warning.
Drivers are urged to slow down on wet roads, allow extra stopping distance, and avoid water-covered roadways. Even shallow standing water can lead to hydroplaning or vehicle stalling.
Rain will gradually taper toward early Friday morning, but additional chances for showers may return later, keeping the ground saturated and prolonging minor flooding concerns.
