Davenport, Iowa – Relief from oppressive heat is on the way for eastern Iowa and western Illinois, but it’s coming with a catch — storms.
According to the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities, Tuesday afternoon will be the final stretch of intense heat, with heat index values peaking near 104°F across Scott, Clinton, Rock Island, and surrounding counties. A Heat Advisory remains in effect until 8 p.m. Tuesday.
After sunset Tuesday, cooler air begins to move in — but so do storms. Showers and thunderstorms are expected to increase Tuesday evening and remain a threat through at least Thursday, with some producing damaging wind gusts, heavy rainfall, and localized flooding. Rivers like the Cedar and Wapsipinicon remain vulnerable due to elevated levels from previous rain.
Motorists on I-74, US-6, and Highway 61 should be prepared for reduced visibility and ponding on roads during downpours.
High humidity and storm potential will linger midweek. Residents should continue to stay weather-aware, especially in flood-prone areas.
Cooler temperatures return briefly, but the break is short-lived — heat and storm chances rise again by Friday.
