Burlington, IA – A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 6 AM Sunday for portions of southeast Iowa, west-central Illinois, and northeast Missouri, where heavy snow and strong winds continue to create hazardous travel conditions, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) Quad Cities.

Forecasters expect an additional 4 to 8 inches of snow across the region today and tonight, on top of snow already on the ground. Winds gusting up to 35 mph through much of the day and night will produce blowing and drifting snow, reducing visibility on open roads and rural highways.

Counties under the warning include Des Moines, Van Buren, and Lee in Iowa; Henderson, Warren, Hancock, and McDonough in Illinois; and Scotland and Clark in Missouri. Major cities impacted include Burlington, Oquawka, Keosauqua, Fort Madison, Carthage, Macomb, Memphis, and Kahoka.

Roads are becoming increasingly hazardous, particularly bridges and overpasses, which tend to freeze first. NWS cautions that travel could become very difficult, and officials encourage delaying trips until after the storm clears Sunday morning.

If travel is unavoidable, drivers should take extreme caution, reduce speeds, and pack a winter emergency kit—including blankets, booster cables, tire chains, food, water, a flashlight, a shovel, and extra clothing.

Road condition updates are available via 511ia.org in Iowa, GettingAroundIllinois.com in Illinois, and modot.org in Missouri.

Snow and wind will gradually diminish toward Sunday morning, though slick spots may persist into early hours.
