Chicago, Illinois – A weaker edge of the powerful Great Lakes snowstorm could still slow travel across parts of Iowa, Illinois, and Indiana beginning Sunday evening as a swath of 4 to 6 inches of snow develops overnight into Monday morning.

According to the National Weather Service, the southern edge of the broader Great Lakes system will push across the region late Sunday. Snowfall rates may briefly reach around 1 inch per hour, especially along and north of the I-80 corridor from eastern Iowa into northern Illinois and northern Indiana.

In eastern Iowa, cities such as Cedar Rapids and the Quad Cities could see around 4 inches by early Monday, creating slick conditions on I-380, I-74, and local bridges during the overnight hours.

Across northern Illinois, the Chicago metro and surrounding counties may receive 4 to 6 inches, enough to slow traffic along I-90, I-290, and I-294 during the early Monday commute. Gusty winds could occasionally reduce visibility, particularly on open roadways west of the metro.

Snow totals decrease farther south, but northern Indiana including South Bend could still see around 4 inches, with slick stretches likely along I-80/90 and the Indiana Toll Road before sunrise Monday.

Drivers should allow extra travel time overnight and early Monday, keep emergency kits in vehicles, and check state DOT road conditions before leaving home. Additional advisories could be issued as the storm tracks east into Monday morning.
