Macomb, Illinois – Thunderstorms dumped as much as three inches of rain across southeast Iowa and west central Illinois early Saturday, flooding roads, creeks, and low-lying neighborhoods in Des Moines County, Macomb, and Monmouth.

According to the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities, a Flash Flood Warning is in effect until 2 p.m. for Des Moines County in Iowa and Henderson, Warren, and northern McDonough counties in Illinois. Radar shows ongoing storms could deliver an additional 1 to 3 inches of rain, with rainfall rates topping one inch per hour. Officials warn flash flooding is already underway and could rapidly worsen.

Flooded streets have been reported in Macomb, Oquawka, and Mediapolis, while rural roads near Monmouth and Roseville remain hazardous. Local emergency managers urge drivers to avoid travel on water-covered roads, noting that most flood deaths occur in vehicles. Residents in low-lying or flood-prone areas should move to higher ground and prepare for possible water intrusions.

This marks the most significant flash flood event for the region so far this summer, with rainfall totals approaching early July 2021’s high-water mark. Utility crews are on standby, and additional warnings or alerts are possible if heavy rain persists.

Flash Flood Warnings remain in effect until 2 p.m. Updates will be issued as conditions change.
