Davenport, Iowa – Heavy rains have triggered a flash flood warning for parts of eastern Iowa and northwestern Illinois, putting more than 230,000 residents at risk and prompting urgent calls for safety in Davenport, Moline, Rock Island, and surrounding cities until 9 p.m. Friday.
According to the National Weather Service Quad Cities, the warning includes areas along the Mississippi River corridor, with rapidly rising waters threatening neighborhoods in Blue Grass, Le Claire, Hampton, and Silvis. Residents are urged to move immediately to higher ground and avoid walking or driving through floodwaters, as several main roads near Davenport and Moline may become impassable through tonight.
Emergency management officials are monitoring potential impacts on local infrastructure, including 66 schools and five hospitals within the affected zone. Motorists should expect hazardous travel along Interstates 74 and 280, as well as U.S. Route 6, where fast-moving water could appear with little warning.
Officials recommend charging mobile devices, preparing emergency kits, and checking on vulnerable neighbors. This is the region’s most significant flash flood threat of the summer, and conditions could change rapidly. Flash flood warnings remain in effect through 9 p.m., with additional advisories possible if rain persists into the night.
